Indoor Fireworks can still burn your fingers…

Sparkler night tonight! My kids quite like the sparklers and the hot dogs promised for Bonfire Night – as they call the 5th November. Thankfully we don’t have any pets. I always feel sorry for our furry friends at this time of year. Can’t be much fun spending the first week of November skulking underneath the bed…

I’m in Cumbernauld today at the Scottish Youth Work Week Conference and I’ve met some very interesting people involved in youth engagement. I was keen to come along to this event to see what was happening in youth work national but in particularly within digital participation – This year’s conference has focused on digital media in relation to youth work.

A couple of presentations today have considered the role of social media and youth engagement – and ideas around video conferencing for youth councils in remote areas of Scotland for example have been particularly interesting.

I also met some youth officers who have been very keen to acknowledge that we have to work hard to ensure that the ‘youth voice’ is representative of a wide mix of different abilities and backgrounds – a very important point in my opinion.

If your having fireworks tonight – read the label, stand well back and don’t be a daftie… Stay safe and make sure Fido is wearing his ear protectors…

All the best

Alan
